Every Thursday afternoon (7th lesson, the second English lesson my 8th grade has on the same day) I make a review activity of the vocabulary items we have learned during the week (35- 50 items).
Every time we play different game such as: snakes and leaders, bingo, jumping stones, tic tac toe and others.
One of the activities that my students liked the most is Tic, Tac Toe.
In this activity I divide the class into two teams. One team gets cards with X sign, the other team gets cards with O.
I draw on the board a square with 9 cells. Then I ask a question, the team that answers the question first is the first to start the game.
I call out a student to give L1 translation, definition, the word in English or simply the spelling or pronunciation of a word, according to the student level.
Each time the team gives a right answer, one of the students will come out and stick the card with their sign on the place they want.
the winning team is the first that has three signs in a row (horizontally, vertically or diagonally).
I think this activity is very beneficial because:
It is a game that the students like, enjoy and look forward to play.
It enables reviewing the words in an enjoyable way.
Students like to play in groups.
It enables me to pass an enjoyable second lesson in the same class and in a late hour during the day
Each student is given an equal opportunity to learn and succeed.
It doesn't need a lot of preparation.
Students have to review the words previously.
It enables collaborative work (they help the student that is asked to answer, they decide upon the cell they want to block with their sign card)
It helps me keep the problematic students focused on winning the game rather than having discipline problems
